If you think Valentine’s Day is saccharine, it might interest you to know that it has roots in the transcendent power of love even during a time of oppression. Can I get a woop woop?!
Accounts of St. Valentine’s martyrdom are mixed, but some say that around February 14 in the year 278 A.D, he was executed for performing marriages in Rome under the rule of Claudius the Cruel. The cruel emperor wanted men to join the army, and he felt that their attachments to their families were preventing them from joining up to fight for the empire, and thus sought to ban all new marriages. St. Valentine broke the law to perform marriages and was executed for it.
No need to be a martyr to take time to honor love. Whether you have a sweetheart, friend or family member you want to surprise this Valentine’s Day, or whether you simply want to give yourself a gift for being uniquely awesome, here’s a chance to win a pair of handmade mixed metal earrings. (Materials: Brass, copper, and niobium hypoallergenic ear wires.)
